1. Make sure the preventer (or boom vang led to rail) is released.

2. Overhaul the mainsheet before the jibe begins.

3. Bring the main to the center of the boat as the boat turns.

4. Let the mainsheet out quickly as the boom crosses the centerline of the boat.

The genoa takes very little effort when jibing. Just ease out the old sheet and pull in the new one. Avoid easing the old sheet too far or the sail will fly out beyond the bow of the boat. If this happens, the whole sail will have to be pulled across the headstay when you try to pull it in on the new side. The accompanying friction and the flogging of the jib can make pulling it across very difficult. The new sheet should be trimmed as the old one is eased, keeping the clew of the sail from going too far forward of the mast as the boat jibes.

When sailing downwind, winging the genoa on a cruising boat with a spinnaker pole (if you have one) can be very effective. The genoa is easily blanketed by the mainsail, so getting it to windward—opposite of the main—greatly increases the sail area projected to the wind.

To sail wing and wing on a run with a spinnaker pole, rig the pole to rest on the headstay with the windward genoa sheet through it. Ease the leeward sheet and pull the clew to the pole with the windward sheet. When it reaches the pole, keep trimming and the pole will pull the genoa out to windward. Trim the sail as if the leech of the genoa is now the luff. Too far back and it collapses, so ease it forward, and vice versa.

To go back to normal sailing, ease the pole forward to the head-stay, trip the windward jibsheet out of the pole’s jaw, trim the leeward sheet, and then stow the pole away.

If your boat doesn’t have a spinnaker pole, you can pull the genoa to the side opposite the main just using your windward genoa sheet. But you have to be on a dead run to keep the genoa full.
